Wood Fence
Our Style Selection
Which Wood Fence Offers the Best Longevity?
When it comes to lasting durability, redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated pine are your top choices. These wood types can extend the life of your fence significantly, often reaching up to 20 years. Typically, fence posts tend to deteriorate first, while panels fare better since they aren’t in direct contact with the ground.
Your fence faces the elements year-round, so it’s crucial to use weather-resistant fasteners during construction. Opt for materials like hot-dipped galvanized or stainless-steel nails and screws to ensure your fence stands strong against the test of time.

Tips to Prolong the Lifespan of Your Wood Fence
A wood fence serves both as an aesthetic addition to your home and a security measure. Typically, these fences endure for around 15 years, but with proper maintenance, you can extend their lifespan to 20 years or more.
Applying paint or stain to your fence is a smart strategy for enhancing its longevity. These coatings shield the wood from moisture and UV rays, preserving its integrity and color. Plan to reapply paint or stain every few years for continued protection.
However, unless you’re working with kiln-dried wood, it’s essential to exercise patience. Wait several months before staining or painting, ideally at the end of a dry season. This waiting period allows the wood to thoroughly dry, including any chemicals used in pressure treatment. Painting or staining prematurely can trap moisture, leading to rot and decay. While pressure-treated wood is resistant to termites and fungal decay, it can still experience issues like swelling, shrinking, cracking, and warping. Kiln-dried wood, having had most of its moisture removed at the factory, is a better choice.
Limit contact between your fence and the ground, vegetation, and nearby trees. Anything your fence touches can introduce excess moisture to the wood, potentially causing problems. Trees, plants, and vines can also damage pickets and affect the structural integrity of posts and pickets.
If you have a sprinkler system, avoid direct spraying onto the fence, as persistent moisture can accelerate wood rot and wear down protective finishes.
Every two to three years, undertake a thorough cleaning of your wood fence to eliminate dirt, moss, mildew, and gray discoloration. Afterward, apply a UV-inhibiting, water-repellent coating to safeguard the wood. Before applying any coatings, make necessary repairs and remove moss or peeling paint by pressure washing the fence.
In case you notice mold on the fence, concoct a solution comprising 20% bleach and 80% mild detergent. Apply it to the fence an hour before washing to eradicate mold spores and deter regrowth.
Expect to reapply paint or stain every 3-5 years, or even sooner if required. Utilize exterior oil-based stain or latex paint, both of which act as moisture barriers, safeguarding against wood rot and limiting weathering. Opt for a stain or sealant that includes UV protection to maintain the wood’s original color. After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for about a week before applying a stain or sealant. You can use either a brush or a power sprayer with a stain-appropriate tip, which is thinner than those used for paint.
